ABSTRACT

Introduction: Mate preference studies have been growing worldwide in recent years; however, the psychological tests used in this area have not been adequately adapted to Spanish-speaking contexts. This study aims to adapt to Spanish one of the most frequently used tests in human sexual selection: Ideal Partner and Relationship Scale (IPRS). Method: The adaptation included the following procedures: (1) Translation by peers; (2) Evaluation by experts; (3) Initial application / Validation (149 participants); (4) Analysis of psychometric properties; and (5) Confirmatory analysis from an independent sample (247 participants). Results: We proceeded to create the final version of the test in Spanish through the information collected. The analysis of the psychometric properties of the IPRS test indicates that the instrument retains stability and consistency similar to the original English version. This new version conserved the factorial structure, which includes five preference dimensions (physical attractiveness, warmth and trust, status and resources, intelligence, and social skills). Similarly, reliability indicators demonstrate good internal and temporal stability. Finally, the participant's preference patterns are equivalent to what has been reported in cross-cultural mate research. Conclusions: The good properties of the collected evidence led to the conclusion that the adaptation of the Spanish IPRS test was successful, as a result of strict validation protocols.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background The traditional infusion of "yerba mate" is widely consumed in South America and exported to countries around the world. Although generally considered a "clear fluid", there is no data to date on the gastric emptying time of yerba mate and safe preoperative fasting intervals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gastric emptying time of a standardized infusion of yerba mate using bedside ultrasound and compare it with the time confirm of hot and cold tea. Methods This was a prospective, randomized crossover experimental study. Thirty healthy volunteers were evaluated after 8 hours of fasting for both fluids and solids. Gastric antral area and gastric volume were evaluated at baseline and every 20 minutes after drinking 300 mL of randomly assigned infusion of "yerba mate", hot tea, or cold tea. Results The mean gastric emptying time was: 69.7 ± 22.1 min, 63.1 ± 14.5 min, and 64.3 ± 23.5 min for the mate, hot tea, and cold tea respectively. No significant differences were found in emptying time among the infusion groups (p-value = 0.043). When same time measures were compared, the only significant difference detected was between hot teas and mate infusion at 20 minutes (p-value = 0.012) Conclusion Yerba mate infusion has a similar gastric emptying time to that of tea. All subject's gastric volume returned to baseline values by 100 minutes. It is reasonable to recommend a similar fasting period of 2 hours for mate infusion prior to elective surgery.

ABSTRACT

Yerba mate ( Ilex paraguariensis ) produces several secondary metabolites of interest to the phar maceutical industry, such as chlorogenic acids and methylxanthines. These compounds have been produced in vitro by callus culture from different species. However, for I. paraguariensis , no studies upon the production of these compounds in vitro have been p erformed to date. In this work, we show that the concentration of secondary metabolites from I. paraguariensis callus is possible and highly dependent on the callus growth phase. We observed that the best phase for the production of secondary compounds in calli of yerba mate is the stationary growth phase on both genotypes tested. In this phase, higher levels of phenolic compounds, chlorogenic acid and 3,5 - dicaffeoylquinic acid and greater antioxidant activity were observed. Chlorogenic acid and 3,5 - dicaffe oylquinic acid presented positive correlation with antioxidant activity. For the first time, secondary compounds were reported in yerba mate calli cultivated in vitro .

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present work aims to study which factors are relevant in long-term mate selection from a lonely-hearts personal advertisement sample of Spanish-speaking consumers of Cosmopolitan Magazine, Colombian Edition. We analyzed One thousand four hundred sixty-eight publications (made by 770 men and 698 women) using a coding system based on the theories of sexual strategies, genetic quality indicators, and the preferences classification used in personal ads studies. Initially, we found trends as a greater predilection for psychological attributes and a greater demand to require more traits than offering them. In addition, the cross-cultural pattern demonstrated that men prefer women's physical characteristics, while women require status/resources by men. Finally, men tended to be more selective in the age range of 36-45 years, while women's selectivity decreased with age. The results replicate many of the patterns found in investigations related to human sexual selection, also bring enlightenment about new preference dimensions to study in the future.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Sexual reproduction is one of the greatest landmarks of the evolution of life on Earth. Although it helped the generation of genetic variability, it also imposed a series of adaptive challenges in organisms, such as the search for mates and strategies to secure reproduction. The theory of sexual selection offers hypotheses to explain that the search and selection of a mate are not arbitrary for complex organisms. It is proposed that there are criteria for selecting reproductive mates that are reflected in psychological mechanisms called preferences, which can guide the choice of partners who have adaptive traits and can benefit, either survival or future reproduction of the offspring that inherit such traits. This review addresses how the conditions imposed by sexuality shape the evolution of behavior, and how those principles apply to human mating behavior. From there, important questions arise to understand the relationship among evolution, preferences and mate selection.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: diseases of the circulatory system are the leading cause of death in the province of Misiones and mate is an infusion of mass consumption in the region. Objectives: to determine the frequency of consumption of mate in apparently healthy young people and its relationship with sex, age, body mass index (BMI) and lipid profile. Materials and methods: a questionnaire was completed to know the consumption habits of yerba mate. Weight and height were measured to calculate BMI. Biochemical determinations were performed with a 12-hour fast; total cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) by colorimetric enzymatic method,HDL-cholesterol (c-HDL) and LDL-cholesterol by homogeneous method; in Siemens Dimension RL MAX auto analyzer.406 young people, 188 men and 218 women were studied. Results: 76.4% consumed mate, higher in women (82.1%) than in men (69.7%) (p=0.003). Consumption was positively associated with age (p<0.001) and no association was observed with BMI (p=0.989). In the consumers of mate; TG (p=0.039), non-HDL cholesterol (0.040), CT/c-HDL (p=0.001) and TG/c-HDL (p=0.001) were significantly lower than in non-consumers, while c -HDL (p = 0.001) was higher. Conclusions: the finding of a favorable effect on the lipid profile in young consumers of YM could constitute a health benefit for those who consume and provide added value when it comes to the conquest of new markets by the herb industry

ABSTRACT

Due to their unique properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being widely explored for industrial and medicalapplications. This has necessitated a thorough assessment of the effect of CNTs on human and animalphysiology and health. Impact of CNTs on epithelial tight junctions has not been evaluated in the context oftheir toxic effects in many biological systems. In the present study, we examined the effect of acid functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (AF-SWCNTs) on the function and expression of two tight junctionproteins (ZO-1 and occludin) in the Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line. Treatment of MDCK cellswith AF-SWCNT resulted in a downregulation of tight junction proteins, decreased trans-epithelial electricalresistance (TER), increased paracellular permeability, and disruption of tight junctions. Taken together, ourdata demonstrate that AF-SWCNT disrupts tight junction barrier by downregulating tight junction proteins inMDCK epithelial cells.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The research on neovascularization in diabetic retinopathy is mostly limited to vascular endothelial growth factor, but 6-phosphofructoklnase-2/fructose-2,6-diphosphatase (PFKFB3) also plays a certain role. OBJECTIVE: To Investigate the effect of PFKFB3-SÍRNA on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) In high glucose environment. METHODS: HUVECs were divided Into four groups: Normal glucose control group (5.5 mmol/L glucose), normal glucose+PFKFB3-slRNA group (5.5 mmol/L glucose+PFKFB3-siRNA), high glucose group (30 mmol/L glucose), high glucose+PFKFB3-slRNA group (30mmol/L glucose+PFKFB3-slRNA). Western blot assay was used to detect the silencing effect of PFKFB3 expression. PFKFB3 with optimal silencing effect was selected for subsequent experiments. The tubule formation was detected by in vitro tubule formation assay. The expression of PFKFB3 mRNA was detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR. The expression of PFKFB3 and AKT protein was detected by western blot. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: PFKFB3-SÍRNA significantly inhibited the expression of PFKFB3 (P 0.05). Compared with the high glucose group, the tube formation ability of the high glucose+PFKFB3-siRNA group was significantly increased (P 0.05). Compared with the high glucose group, the ratio of p-AKT/AKT protein in the high glucose+PFKFB3-siRNA group was increased (P < 0.01). To conclude, siRNA silencing of PFKFB3 gene expression can inhibit the expression of PFKFB3 and improve tube formation in HUVECs. The mechanism may be related to the down-regulation of AKT expression.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The expansion and intensification of agriculture causes profound changes at a global scale, which generates a strong impact on crop productivity and consequently, a decrease in the biodiversity associated. Ilex paraguariensis, known as yerba mate, is a native species from South America and it has been introduced in the world market (e.g. Middle East, Europe, and United States) due to its multiple nutritional benefits and antioxidant properties. The association of plants of I. paraguarensis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), especially under field conditions, has been scarcely reported so far. Objective: The aim of this work was to assess the species composition, richness, spore density and diversity of Glomeromycota communities of yerba mate under different crop and natural conditions, seasonally over a 2-year period. Methods: Soil samples were extracted in winter and summer from five productive sites (situations 1-5), with contrasting crop conditions with regard to historical management, as a reference situation (situation 6). Spores were identified following morphological criteria. Results: Acaulosporaceae and Glomeraceae presented the highest spore densities in all sampling sites/ seasons/years. The lowest spore density and diversity index was recorded in 2014, when rainfall was higher than in 2013. Discussion: We reported Acaulospora capsicula detected by morphological analysis, for the first time in South America. Differences between years could be attributed to rainfall. This study contributes to the knowledge of the dynamics and factors that influence the structure of AMF communities over time. This information would be valuable to generate conservation strategies for this group of microorganisms, which are key to the sustainable development of yerba mate cultivation systems.

ABSTRACT

In the present study the effect of drinking mate in routine biochemical tests was evaluated. Blood was collected from 32 female volunteers after a 12 h fasting period. In addition, 1 hour (T1), 2 hours (T2), and 3 hours (T3) after drinking 5 mates, blood was collected again. Hematological parameters and clinical chemistry analytes were studied. The results were analyzed using statistical tests for related samples. Mean difference % (MD%) was calculated for each analyte and was further compared with reference change value (RCV). The MDs% higher than RCV were considered clinically significant. At T1, T2, and T3 the count neutrophils, eosinophils and lymphocytes were lower than at T0. Also glucose, urea, creatinine, and cystatin C values were lower than at T0 whereas total proteins, LDL-C, and LD enzymatic activity values were higher than at T0. In all cases, variability was statistically significant but not clinically significant. Drinking 5 mates prior to phlebotomy does not interfere with the results of routine biochemical tests.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to understand the ideological movement operated by the Brazilian press in creating a terrorist 's image of the psychologist Pauline Reichstul, murdered in 1973. With this, we resume part of the historiography ofpsychologists who had some role in the resistance against the 1964 class coup. Using the theoretical and methodological assumptions of historical and dialectical materialism, and based on the conception of criticai study of vygotskian theory, we made the concrete analysis of the Brazilian press in dealing with the Pauline 's murder in the Massacre of Chácara São Bento. We searched about Pauline Reichstul in the databases of the newspapers of that time, available at the Biblioteca Nacional. It gave us the empirical material, making it possible to reconstruct this movement from these publications. In the end, we conclude that the construction of this psychologist's image has only become possible through her dehumanization, promoted by the ideological mediation of the press. It served, therefore, like a cog in the machine of the Brazilian State.

ABSTRACT

Current study systematically investigated the interaction of two alkaloids, anisodine and monocrotaline, with organic cation transporter OCT1, 2, 3, MATE1 and MATE2-K by using in vitro stably transfected HEK293 cells. Both anisodine and monocrotaline inhibited the OCTs and MATE transporters. The lowest IC was 12.9 µmol·L of anisodine on OCT1 and the highest was 1.8 mmol·L of monocrotaline on OCT2. Anisodine was a substrate of OCT2 (K = 13.3 ± 2.6 µmol·L and V = 286.8 ± 53.6 pmol/mg protein/min). Monocrotaline was determined to be a substrate of both OCT1 (K = 109.1 ± 17.8 µmol·L, V = 576.5 ± 87.5 pmol/mg protein/min) and OCT2 (K = 64.7 ± 14.8 µmol·L, V = 180.7 ± 22.0 pmol/mg protein/min), other than OCT3 and MATE transporters. The results indicated that OCT2 may be important for renal elimination of anisodine and OCT1 was responsible for monocrotaline uptake into liver. However neither MATE1 nor MATE2-K could facilitate transcellular transport of anisodine and monocrotaline. Accumulation of these drugs in the organs with high OCT1 expression (liver) and OCT2 expression (kidney) may be expected.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of glutamate (Glu) injected into hypothalamic pa-raventricular nucleus (PVN) on visceral pain of chronic visceral hypersensitivity (CVH) rats and its possi-ble mechanism. Methods Newborn SD rats were given CVH rat model by colorectal distension (CRD) on the 8th,10th and 12th day after birth. Thirty rats with successful CVH model were randomly divided into CVH model group (CVH group),CVH + injection of saline into PVN group (NS group),CVH+ injection of Glu into PVN (3,6,and 12 μg Glu,namely G3,G6,and G12,respectively),6 rats in each group, and 6 SD rats with matching body mass were taken as sham operation group (Sham group). The pain behavior of the rats was evaluated by pain threshold, abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) score, and abdominal external ob-lique muscle electromyography (EMG). The expression of arginine vasopressin (AVP) and the proliferation of colon tissue were detected by immunohistochemical staining. The apoptosis of colon tissue was detected by TUNEL. Results Compared with the NS group, the pain thresholds of the G3, G6 and G12 groups in-creased,and the AWR scores and EMG amplitudes decreased. The differences were statistically significant (Pain threshold:t=7. 65,16. 31,24. 78,both P<0. 05;AWR scores:t=-2. 98,-4. 77,-7. 29,both P<0. 05;EMG amplitudes:t=-3. 06,-5. 75,-8. 92,both P<0. 05). Compared with the Sham group, the expression of AVP in PVN of the CVH group and NS group decreased ((42. 63±5. 20) %,(18. 67±2. 94) %,(17. 53± 2. 47) %; t=6. 95,t=7. 56,both P<0. 05). The expression of AVP was increased after different doses of Glu into PVN,and the AVP level in G12 group ((18. 15±6. 49)%) was higher than that of NS group, the difference was statistically significant (t=-4. 21,P<0. 05). Compared with the Sham group, the expression of PCNA in colonic mucosal cells of the CVH group and NS group decreased ((65. 48±1. 68) %,(18. 39± 1. 67) %,(17. 69±1. 68) %;t=34. 35,t=34. 80,both P<0. 05). The expression of PCNA was increased after different doses of Glu injected into PVN,and the PCNA level in G12 group ((59. 91±5. 63)%) was higher than that of NS group, the difference was statistically significant (t=-12. 44,P<0. 05). Compared with the Sham group, the expression of apoptotic cells in colonic mucosal cells of the CVH group and NS group increased ((23. 38±11. 40)%,(83. 79± 3. 57)%,(80. 91± 2. 47)%;t=-8. 77,t=-8. 54,both P<0. 05). The expression of apoptotic cells was decreased after different doses of Glu into PVN,and the G12 group was ((18. 15±6. 49) %). Compared with NS group, the difference was statistically significant ( t=15. 65,P<0. 05). Conclusion Injection of Glu into hypothalamic PVN can alleviate the visceral pain be-haviors in CVH rats, and its mechanism may be related to arginine vasopressin.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Samples of 168 maté trees (Ilex paraguariensis) from four natural populations of different states of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul) were analyzed for their variability in storage proteins seed, which were used to estimate the degree of differentiation among and within species, because are relatively stable during evolution. Data on band presence/absence from 80 different polypeptides were used to perform similarity coefficient of Jaccard. A high level of genetic variability was reported within sampled populations (SJ intra=0.374). Lower levels of diversity were observed between populations (SJ inter=0.308). Total genetic diversity of maté was Hsp=0.264 estimated by Shannon measure. Partition of that value disclosed that 95 % of the total diversity is within-population, and only 5% to between-populations. The phenogram based on King's distances indicates a certain degree of geographic differentiation. This represents the first study on storage protein variability in I. paraguariensis and guides the choice of the specimens to increment germoplasm banks and genetic improvement programs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: The consumption of yerba mate (YM) (Ilex paraguariensis) is common in South America and is now used all over the world. It contains many bioactive substances that can be beneficial. There is also the opinion that it may have harmful effects on heart rhythm, but no studies have been found on this. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute effect of YM on heart rhythm in patients referred for a Holter study. Method: A before and after pseudo-experimental clinical study was conducted by performing a Holter on 50 habitual users of YM, and another one after 24 without YM consumption. The use of other products that could interfere was also controlled. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 55 ± 15 years, and 52% were women. At least one vascular risk factor was found in 78%, with 44% structural heart disease, and 90% taking cardio- vascular medication. The heart rate (HR) with and without YM was similar. Only the minimum hourly HR was lower when taking YM (61 ± 10 vs. 63 ± 9, P = .021). There was no significant diffe- rence in the incidence of sustained or non-sustained arrhythmias, or in ventricular extrasystoles. The total number of supra-ventricular premature beats was higher without YM (952 ± 3,538 vs. 1,294 ± 5,201, P = .014) and also the maximum hourly (86 ± 302 vs. 107 ± 360, P = .032). There was no difference in HR variability. Conclusions: In cardiology patients, usual users of YM, habitual consumption was not associated with significant changes in HR or an increase in the incidence of arrhythmias. There was less ectopic supraventricular activity.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases is increased in postmenopausal women, which contributes to the burden of illnesses in this period of life. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a native bush from Southern South America. Its leaves are rich in phenolic components, which may have antioxidant, vasodilating, hypocholesterolemic, and hypoglycemic proprieties. This post hoc analysis of the case-control study nested in the Obesity and Bone Fracture Cohort evaluated the consumption of yerba mate and the prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary diseases in postmenopausal women. Ninety-five postmenopausal women were included in this analysis. A questionnaire was applied to evaluate the risk factors and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and consumption of yerba mate infusion. Student's t-test and chi-square test were used to assess significant differences between groups. The group that consumed more than 1 L/day of mate infusion had significantly fewer diagnoses of coronary disease, dyslipidemia, and hypertension (P<0.049, P<0.048, and P<0.016, respectively). Furthermore, the serum levels of glucose were lower in the group with a higher consumption of yerba mate infusion (P<0.013). The serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides were similar between the groups. This pragmatic study points out the benefits of yerba mate consumption for the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. The ingestion of more than 1 L/day of mate infusion was associated with fewer self-reported cardiovascular diseases and lower serum levels of glucose. Longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate the association between yerba mate infusion and reduction of cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

Studies have suggested that total energy intake and diet composition affect lifespan and ageing. A high-fat diet induces oxidative stress and affects the development of diseases. In contrast, antioxidants are capable of reducing its harmful effects. Yerba mate beverages are an important source of antioxidants, but there is scarce knowledge about their effects on suppressing fat accumulation. Here, we investigated the compounds present in yerba mate extracts and assessed their effects on Drosophila melanogaster given a high cholesterol diet. LS-ESI-MS analysis showed the presence of matesaponins, phenolic compounds and methylxanthines in all of the examined extracts. In Drosophila, under extract treatment conditions, the mean lifespan was significantly extended from 38 to 43 days, there was an increase in the ability to support induced stress and decrease in lipid peroxidation products. Moreover, yerba mate extracts recovered the glutathione S-transferases (GST) activity and reduced the cholesterol level. Taken together, our results support that extracts can extend lifespan by reducing the detrimental effect of a high-fat diet in D. melanogaster, and this outcome can be associated with the compound content in the extracts. This study improves the understanding of natural interventions that reduce stress-induced oxidative damage, which is fundamental in promoting healthy ageing.
